Today Show

The Today Show, NBC, December 19, 2002, interview by Katie Couric:

Katie: Let's take a look back at the moment she learned that she had won a gold medal...(clip)...And here she is 10 months later. Sarah Hughes, good morning! Watching that video must be so much fun for you. Has it finally sunk in? I guess 10 months, it has, right?

Sarah: Yeah, the time has gone so quickly but I've been having the time of my life and things have just been great.

Katie: In fact, you've become a major celebrity, missy. You have got your pictuer on cans of Campbells soup, we have little props here this morning for you Sarah. We've got the Campbells soup cans with your picture. And at the Stage Deli here in NY, they've actually named a sandwich after you. This is the Sarah Hughes tuna melt, which really should be by Mrs. Paul's at this point because it's more like frozen fish. Did you realize there's a sandwich named after you at the Stage Deli?

Sarah: You know, I didn't even know about the Stage Deli. In my hometown there is a sandwich, but this is a different sandwich and it's my dad's favorite.

Katie: Oh really? There you have it! I'm so glad to see your family. You have such a terrific family. Other good news for you Sarah, you got into Harvard early admission. Are you going to go there? I thought maybe you'd want to go to the University of Virginia?

Sarah: (Laughs)

Katie: I guess not. A lot of people have been plugging thier schools though, haven't they?

Sarah: Yeah, everybody, it's great when people have such great respect for their school and are so enthusiastic about it, but I haven't really decided what I'm going to do, but getting early acceptance to Harvard was a great thrill for me and my family. Especially because education has been so important to me and has played such a vital role in my life.

Katie: I know you're still waiting to hear from Princeton, Yale, Columbia. You little braniac, you, miss smarty pants! That's fantastic! And I also know that you've got a special on NBC called "Sarah Hughes: A Life in Balance" which really seems to personify how you've approached your life, because you're a wonderful skater, clearly, but you really do have balance in your life, don't you?

Sarah: Well, we try. It's something my parents instilled on me from early on to try to be well rounded and just to educate yourself in all aspects of life. I'm really excited about my special. You get to meet me, I skate several times to new numbers. You meet my family, and just go around and see what I've been up to the last 10 months, as you've said. I'd just like people to see it and I had a great time making it.

Katie: That's a great way to spend Christmas night. Meanwhile, I can't wait to see your special. I can't wait to see you skate this morning, I know you're going to be skating to a medley of Bob Fosse tunes.

Sarah: Correct.

Katie: We're going to remove the Sarah Hughes tuna melt, the Campbells soup and myself from the rink. Sarah Hughes!
